Break Sokos Hotel Koli Transitions to Geothermal Energy

Break Sokos Hotel Koli, located in the scenic Koli National Park, replaced its oil heating system with an environmentally friendly geothermal solution. The hotel’s facilities, spanning 28,000 cubic meters, previously consumed up to 180,000 liters of oil annually, producing 476 tons of CO₂ emissions.

Hybrid Geothermal Heating System

The new system, operational since 2018, includes:

  • 4 Gebwell Taurus 90 kW geothermal heat pumps with desuperheaters.
  • 2 air-to-water heat pumps.
  • A G-Power cooling unit.
  • An oil backup system.

The geothermal system also provides cooling, maintaining comfortable room temperatures of 23°C also in summer with bedrock-sourced cooling energy.

Reduced Carbon Footprint

In just two months, oil consumption dropped by 20,000 liters. The hotel, now Green Key certified, has significantly cut costs and emissions while enhancing sustainability.

“The project proceeded smoothly, even with all drilling and other activities carried out near the hotel. There were no customer disturbances—in fact, there was considerable interest in the work. The energy transition has worked as intended for us, and we can recommend this change to others in the future.”says hotel director Marko Riikkinen.
