Modern district heating technology for Oulu Main Library

Oulu Main Library has been under renovation since autumn 2022. During the three-year refurbishment, the entire building services system of the 1982 property was renewed and the premises updated to meet today’s needs.

The building’s heating and cooling systems were also modernized. Radiators were added to the property to distribute heating and cooling alongside traditional radiators and convectors. For cooling, a water chiller with heat recovery was installed, allowing the hybrid heat exchangers in the district heating substation to utilize cooling condensate for heating.

Gebwell supplied a 3-circuit G-Power district heating substation to the heating system, as well as a 1000-litre G-Energy Custom buffer tank with cellular rubber insulation and a 500-litre G-Energy Custom tank. The system was designed and installed by our partner Aro Systems, who was responsible for the entire HVAC, electrical and automation contract.

“The whole process from quotation to delivery went perfectly – everything arrived precisely and on time. We ordered the district heating substation with pre-installed accessories such as safety valves, dirt separators and energy meters, which made the on-site installation easier and faster,” Malila says about the project and continues: “Together with Gebwell’s Tatu, we also visited the site in advance to review the technical room and transport routes. These were taken into account in the design, and the property received a district heating substation that fit perfectly in terms of dimensions as well. The system has been final inspected and is in operation.”

The library located on Vänmanninsaari will open to the public in November 2025 under its new name, Central Library Saari.
