Gebwell is phasing out synthetic refrigerants and launching a climate-safe heat pump range

Press release 21 April 2026

The choice of refrigerants for heat pumps is undergoing a major shift. New EU-wide regulation is tightening requirements and driving the transition towards refrigerants with significantly lower climate impact. A heat pump is a long-life technical product that is serviced throughout its lifecycle. During servicing, repairs or decommissioning, refrigerant may be released into the atmosphere, which makes its climate impact highly significant. Several years ago, Gebwell concluded that natural refrigerants are the only suitable long-term solution.

We want to help build a cleaner future by developing heating solutions that consider not only the climate but also impacts on the atmosphere and the environment. In this way, we support our customers in choosing increasingly responsible heating and cooling solutions for buildings,” says Martti Artama, CEO of Gebwell.

Gebwell launched its first ground-source heat pumps using the natural refrigerant R290 in 2024. The company is now expanding its offering with a heat pump product family covering the 30–120 kW output range for buildings of different sizes. This broad output range makes it easier to select the right solution for different applications and allows the same product family to be used across a wide range of building sizes.

This is not just about a single new product. It is about a broad product family and a clear strategic direction. Solutions based on natural refrigerants represent the future of heat pumps. In practice, the technology has already proven to be high-performing, reliable and safe,” says Joni Räsänen, Chief Technology Officer.

The R290 refrigerant used in G-Eco heat pumps has a GWP of 0.02. GWP, or Global Warming Potential, indicates how much a substance contributes to global warming if released into the atmosphere. R290 has a very low climate impact. Measured by GWP, its impact is more than 100,000 times lower than that of R410A, a refrigerant traditionally used in heat pumps,” Räsänen continues.

Gebwell will showcase its G-Eco heat pumps at the Nordbygg trade fair in Stockholm on 21–24 April 2026.

Founded in 2006, Gebwell Oy specialises in heating and cooling solutions for buildings and has subsidiaries in Sweden and Poland. Gebwell Group employs 300 people in four countries, and its revenue in 2025 was EUR 48 million. Gebwell manufactures district heating substations in Finland and Poland, and in Finland also ground-source heat pumps and storage tanks.
