District heating operating principle
District heating is produced in a district heating plant, where heat is transferred to water circulating in the district heating network. This hot water is piped underground to buildings connected to the network.
At the property, a district heating substation transfers the heat from the district heating network’s water to the property’s own heating network and domestic hot water, without the two water circuits ever mixing. Once the heat has been transferred, the cooled water is returned to the district heating plant to be reheated, in a continuous circulation.
Connecting to district heating
To connect a property to district heating, a district heating substation is installed, sized according to the property’s heating and domestic hot water needs. Availability of district heating depends on whether a district heating network already reaches the property’s location – it is worth checking availability with the local district heating provider before planning a connection.
